The Sunshine Coast
Sand between your toes, the sun on your back, fish and chips by the water, smiling faces, the babble of a rainforest stream and crisp mountain air …the essence of a Sunshine Coast holiday.Where else in the world can you find pristine coastline and hinterland, superb cuisine, action and adventure or just the perfect piece of sand on which to sit and ponder?
The Coast begins at Caloundra, just an hour's drive north of Brisbane and extends to Cooloola, the gateway to Fraser Island. It takes in tranquil hinterland including the Glasshouse Mountains, Blackall Range, Noosa Hinterland and the Mary Valley; as well as more than 100 kilometres of beaches stretching through the coastal towns of Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Coolum, Noosa and Rainbow Beach.
There's plenty to do (if you feel like it), friendly locals, an abundance of sunshine and a vast array of accommodation and attractions. It's holiday central for both couples and families. You can keep the kids happy fishing, visiting attractions, canoeing or wandering the markets. Rivers, sheltered bays and surf beaches provide a variety of swimming spots. If time together is scarce, factor in an indulgent massage for two, a quiet rainforest walk, a round of golf or a romantic dinner in the mountains or by the sea.
There are plenty of 'one day I'll do it' challenges on offer like learning to surf, tandem skydiving, hang gliding, climbing a mountain, abseiling or joining a cooking school. Soft adventurers can ride a camel or horse on Noosa's north shore, four wheel drive Teewah Beach and Cooloola National Park, join a Harley tour of the Blackall Range, dive with Manta Ray at Wolf Rock or join an estuary or deep sea fishing charter from Mooloolaba.
If recharging is your aim relax under the shade of a pandanus on the beach, wander through national parks, follow the food and wine trails, or browse in hinterland art galleries. Walks on the beach, a spot of retail therapy, or lazing by the pool with a good book are also on the agenda.
Eating is one of the distinct pleasures of a Sunshine Coast holiday. The Coast is blessed with a unique style of cuisine featuring local produce grown in the lush hinterland and plucked fresh from rivers and surrounding oceans. You can browse the famous Eumundi Market or Noosa Farmers Market for the best of what's in season; taste award winning ice-cream and cheese; buy just-picked tropical fruits from the farm gate; devour a kilo of prawns at Mooloolaba or a choice steak at a heritage hotel in Gympie; or settle down to dine in an elegant restaurant overlooking mountains, rivers or the sea.
There's no shortage of places to lay your head. Your idea of bliss might be a country guesthouse on the Blackall Range, a five-star resort or a family apartment beside the ocean, your own beach camp or the flexibility of captaining a houseboat on a peaceful river or inlet.
Whatever you're after, you'll find it on the Sunshine Coast. It's the perfect mix of coast and country and the ideal place to relax and unwind.
